Myth-busting study of teenage brains wins Royal Society prize

by Sian Cain

I’ve chosen this article because I’d like to learn more about the human brain.

Sarah-Jayne Blakemore has won the prestigious Royal Society prize for science book of the year. In the book, Blakemore states that risk-taking, self-absorption, emotional instability and heightened self-consciousness are signs of the development of human brains during puberty. These behaviors are reasonable and normal, considering that the biological purpose of adolescence is to create a sense of self. It means our society shouldn’t ridicule young people for demonstrating such behaviors. Sarah-Jayne Blakemore also argues that GCSEs put teenagers under enormous amounts of stress during a period of an important neurological change. She recommends that teenagers should go to bed later and start school later because brain’s circadian rhythm is chaotic during puberty. Blakemore’s research also shows that the period of human adolescence lasts until our 20s and 30s.

1) Are there any other myths about human brain and behavior that were recently discredited?
2) Will our society accept the arguments made by Sarah-Jayne Blakemore and start treating teenagers and young people in a different way?
